It’s time once again to name our MidcoSN Player of the Year for South Dakota Class AA high school basketball.
With every class, it’s not a task I take lightly. I talk to coaches, players, media members and others who follow the game closely. I watch dozens of games throughout the season with subjective eyes and come up with a list of contenders and ultimately choose the player of the year in each class.
Every year I think to myself, "Wow there’s never going to be another class as talented as this one." Then, the following year, I’m surprised and impressed with another great crop of student-athletes.
Class AA Girls
Sydni Schetnan, Sr. – Sioux Falls Washington
16.1 PPG | 9.2 RPG | 67 blocks | 57.6 FG%
The All-State center from Washington was the most dominant player in the state every time she stepped on the court. She had a strong career up until her senior year, but Sydni flourished this season by staying healthy and stepping up her scoring, rebounding and defensive intensity. One thing that isn’t measured on the stat line was Sydni’s intimidation factor. Teams were forced to shoot outside the paint because anything close to the bucket would be altered or swatted by Schetnan.
Her coach Jamie Parish has high praise for the outstanding athlete, "Syd moves very well for a 6’5” athlete. She is able to run the floor, has good hands, and moves well to rebound balls out of her area."
She finished her career with 186 blocks. She will continue her athletic career next year at Louisville where she will join the basketball team and the volleyball team.

Mors is the first four-time winner of the MidcoSN Player of the Year. Matthew has put teams on notice since he broke into the varsity roster as a 7th grader and entered the starting lineup as an 8th grader. He finished his career as the all-time leading scorer in Class AA history and number four in all classes with 2,707 points. His senior season was highlighted with a 17-3 regular season and a third-place finish at the state tournament.
"Matthew’s basketball IQ is so high. I’m appreciative he’s been so coachable for six years. He’s a truly special player," said Head Coach Chris Haynes.
Matthew Mors now moves to the Big 10 where he’ll suit up as a Wisconsin Badger.
