Good(by)e, Mick Garry: Reflections of a Sportswriter

I love my job. Always have. I can’t imagine what it would feel like to have someone tell me they didn’t want me to do it anymore.

Unfortunately, that’s something a good friend of mine recently experienced. Mick Garry – a man many of you know, too – lost his job at the Argus Leader on January 23, 2019. He’d been there nearly 30 years, spending the last 23 or so as the beat writer for University of South Dakota athletics.

In true journalistic fashion, he broke the news himself on social media.

Since then, Mick hasn’t said much else publicly about his departure or the specific reasons for it. He also hadn’t shared anything about his favorite memories or the relationships he forged during his time covering the Coyotes.

I wanted to offer my friend that opportunity, and I’m so glad I did.
