No more need for volleyball rankings now that it is playoff time. In South Dakota Class AA district play began with a playin game on Monday and continued on Tuesday. Here's a recap of Tuesday's action.
District 1AA
Roosevelt handled Brookings in three sets (25-17, 25-11, 25-11). Rylee Boyd and Mikaela Ahrendt both had double digit kills. O’Gorman meanwhile came out swinging in the first two sets against Watertown winning 25-22 and 25-18, but the Arrows turned the tides in set three and four winning 25-23 and 25-17. The Knights rallied to win the fifth and deciding set 15-10. Rylee Smith led the way with 18 kills. Now Roosevelt hosts Sioux Falls O’Gorman on Saturday night at 7:00 pm for the right to advance to the state tournament. Brookings and Watertown play Saturday night where the loser faces elimination.
District 2AA
Sioux Falls Washington rode the roller coaster and came out with a five set win over Brandon Valley (25-18, 12-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-11). Head Coach Kelly Schroeder was excited about the team’s effort,
“It’s very big, I’ve been telling the girls if we can get a win tonight the road to state is definitely a lot easier.” - Kelly Schroeder, SF Washington Head Coach
Lily Bartling led the way for the Warriors with 15 kills. In Harrisburg it was Lincoln with the three set sweep of Harrisburg (25-23, 28-26, 25-21). That was only the second match that the Tigers suffered this year. Anezka Szabo led the Patriots with 21 kills. Now Lincoln travels across the east side of town to play Washington for the district title and a berth in the state tournament.
Distict 3AA
Mitchell was another top seed to fall on Tuesday. Pierre beat them 25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 27-25. Pierre got 19 kills from Elena Svingen to advance to the district finals. Huron beat Aberdeen 25-19, 33-31, 25-18. They endured an amazing second set to win 33-31. In that set, Huron held off 8 Aberdeen set points and Aberdeen held off 3 Huron set points. Huron got big nights from Shannon Katz (12 kills) and Karissa Schroder (11 kills).
District 4AA
Top seed Rapid City Stevens had no problem with Sturgis Brown 25-9, 25-5, 25-7 in a sweep. Haley Molstad had 9 kills and Emily Sobczak had 8 kills for the Raiders. Rapid City Central made a nice comeback to advance past Douglas 20-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-18. The Cobblers were led by Sam Seljeskog who had 12 kills in the win.
