SD State B Tournament

SD Class B State Tournament

Monday May 26, 2014 – 10:00am Sioux Falls Baseball Stadium

Parkston vs. St. Thomas More

Parkston has been outstanding both pitching and hitting this year. That showed in a 9-2 come from behind win against Vermillion in the regional finals to qualify for the state tournament. Dillon Stadiman has been the ace of the Parkston staff and they’ve had great success from closer Jacob Weber as well. Zach Scott, Spencer Lucas and Jake Weber have been all-state caliber this year at the plate.  Parkston finished the year undefeated and have possibly played the toughest schedule in the state.

St. Thomas More has been the number one team in my power rankings all season long. They’ve embarrassed most of their opponents. Their only loss came in the second game of a double header with Class A Sturgis. The Cavs have played in two one-run games this year against Chamberlain and Platte, other than that they’ve won most of their games by double digits. Sophomore, George Eccarius has been outstanding on the mound and so has junior Lincoln Feist. The Cavs hitting starts with SDSU recruit Newt Johnson. The rest of the lineup packs a punch too with Caden Skinner, Travis Mills and Andrew Montoya.

Madison vs. West Central

Madison

Madison hasn’t had the same level of competition as Parkston or St. Thomas More but they’ve hit the ball as well as anyone in the class. The Regional final between Madison and Milbank proved that as the Bulldogs won 12-0 in 5 innings.  Winning pitcher was Jacob Leighton who tossed a one-hit shutout and recorded 12 strikeouts.  Madison had 10 hits.  Leighton had a double and three singles.  Heith Williams had two singles and Jacob Giles, Reid Guse, Jordan Unterbrunner, and Mitch Hansen each had a single.

The Bulldogs Leading Hitters:  Reid Guse (.647), Jacob Giles (.565), Jacob Leighton (.455)Heath Williams (.455)

Leading Pitchers:  Jacob Leighton, Jacob Giles, Reid Guse, Brandon Burg

Stolen Bases in 7 games:  Jacob Giles with 16

RBIs in 7 games:  Jacob Leighton with 19

West Central

Matt Johanssen, WEST CENTRAL Matt Johanssen, WEST CENTRAL

West Central has a senior heavy team that came out of a tough region standing. The Trojans rolled through region play with an impressive 12-1 win in the regional final against SF Christian. The Trojans might have the best one-two punch on the mound with Matt Johanssen and Gabe Wiezorek. They will need those two to pitch well to keep the Trojans in the tournament.

This is the first time West Central has made it to a state tournament and they’re going to make the most of it.
