Signing Day Extras

Varsity Sports Now featured some of the top high school stars from North Dakota and South Dakota in our annual signing day special on February 5, 2014. But we didn't have enough time to talk about some of these top athletes in the constraints of our show. Here is what some area coaches had to say about these futures D1 athletes.

Luke Bacon (NDSU) 6-6, 265   OL/DL  TGU

“Luke has the potential to be a fine college football player.  We all know there are many variables that go into having success at the next level, but I believe Luke understands what it takes and what will be expected of him entering the NDSU program.”  – Scott Thorson, TGU Head Coach

Stanley Jones (NDSU) 6-4, 225 DE Bismarck High

“I don’t remember coaching better defensive player” – Mark Gibson, Bismarck Head Coach

Tanner Volson (NDSU) 6-6, 285 DL/OL Drake/Anamoose

“Volson likes to play defense in high school, but he said NDSU offensive coordinator Brent Vigen envisions him more as an offensive lineman.” – Coach Arnold

Dakota Thorstenson (SDSU) 6-5, 215  TE/DE Herreid/Selby

“Dakota is one of the best athletes I've had the opportunity to coach in my 18 years of doing so.  He played tight end and defensive end for us.  Teams ran away from him for the most part and offensively, opponents knew going in that they were going to have to gameplan to try and take him away with the passing game.  He was an outstanding run blocker as well.  He is a very competitive individual and will no doubt give 100%, regardless of where the Jackrabbits feel he will fit them best.”  –Jeff Kosters, Herreid/Selby Head Coach

Zach Morehead (SDSU) 6-4, 265 OL  Tea Area

“Zach was a 3-year starter for Tea Area at offensive tackle.  He is a big, strong player with really good feet and athletic ability.  He is a smart football player that works hard in the off-season and should be able to make an impact in the future for SDSU.” –Coach Craig Clayberg

Justin Harkless (USD) 6-0, 170 QB/FS

“Justin is a quiet leader. The kid is a student of the game, constantly working on his mechanics. Never satisfied, always striving to get better. One of Justin's biggest attributes is his ability to perform in the "big moment". Justin will pick up the college "system" quickly. Coachable: Justin understands the opportunity he has. Not a selfish bone in his body, he'll go above and beyond what's asked of him(whatever is best for the Team).” – Ben Kramer, Hot Springs Head Coach

Chase Glazier (USD) 6-5, 190 QB/DB  Custer

“Chase has been a three year starter for our varsity throwing for just about 1500 yds in each of those three seasons.  He is a 6'5 190lb kid who is going to play QB.  Chase has worked very hard in high school to become a very accurate QB and I am looking forward to seeing develop in college.  I believe he has a lot more to show and could become a very good college QB.”  – Coach Russ Bailey
