The 9-0 Washington Warriors have opened the season in focused fashion. Credit the experience and leadership of the seven Washington seniors who have accounted for 80% of the teams’ 64.1 points per game this year. Even more impressive the Warriors have only allowed 31.9 points per game to a pretty talented schedule. The only player who has contributed significantly who is not a senior is sophomore Sydney Arrington who has scored 9.5 points per game in just 11.8 minutes per game since getting back on the court two games ago.  

This Friday Washington faces what might be their biggest obstacle between them and a perfect season. They go to Marshall Minnesota to play the Tigers (12-0). Marshall is a school with great tradition. Their coach Dan Westby has enjoyed success on the volleyball court coaching his team to three consecutive state titles. Coach Westby has also had great teams in the basketball gym. Last season his Tigers were 24-5 overall and lost to Washington 54-38 on January 18. This season the Tigers are improved and  will have a variety of defenses waiting for the Warriors to try to cause havoc and turn them into points. Sarah Buysse leads the team in scoring at 16.2 points per game with Kenzie Beekman and Hannah Bennett both in double digit scoring as well.

Washington Coach Nate Malchow knows they’ll have their hands full with a very athletic team,

“Should be a great environment and big crowd there as both teams will be undefeated coming into the game.  We embrace games like this within our program as we have always tried to schedule the best teams we can find, and this will be a big one.  We will need to bring our A-game.”

The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00pm in Marshall on Friday January 17.
