High School Basketball Power Rankings- North Dakota and South Dakota

SD BOYS AA:

1. Huron       (9-1)

2. RC Stevens       (10-1)

3. SF Roosevelt       (5-1)

4. Pierre       (7-2)

5. SF Washington       (6-4)

Huron passed one of their biggest tests of the year with a huge road win over Pierre on Tuesday. Justin Decker showed his stuff with a 32 point outburst in that game. Roosevelt is looking at a stretch with four games in six days against some good competition including the orange-hot Washington Warriors on Thursday night.

SD BOYS A:

1. Madison       (10-0)

2. Sioux Valley       (11-0)

3. Pine Ridge       (7-1)

4. Roncalli       (8-1)

5. Clark/Willow Lake       (8-2)

Madison is currently on a 21-game winning streak and most games haven’t been close. Sioux Valley gets a tough test in the Hanson Classic on Saturday against St. Thomas More. Sioux Valley coach Bill Vincent thinks the experience of this year’s team has been an advantage,

“We Feel like we are a deep and experienced team.  We have been pleased with the amount of energy and effort that our team is playing with.  We do a nice job of sharing the ball.  We are a great rebounding team, maybe the best rebounding team I have had.  St. Thomas More has a lot of pride in their program and will always compete at a high level.  They are possibly the best defensive team in the State.  We will need to contain their scorers, Henderson & Laurenti.  We will need to be able to apply some pressure to their point guard, Friedel.”

2. White River       (10-1)

3. James Valley Christian        (8-1)

4. Wolsey-Wessington       (6-1)

5. Sully Buttes       (6-1)

Despite a loss Tuesday night I kept Langford at number one. Coach Paul Raasch knows these tough games will test his Lions,

“We have been playing better defense lately than we did to start the season, but will get tested this week with Clark-WL, Castlewood, and JVC.  Offensively we have played well at time but need to find a little more consistency. We have shot the ball well from 3-point range all season.  Our rebounding is not where we want it to be yet but getting there.”

Langford will play against James Valley Christian in the Hanson Classic night cap. JVC head Coach Darwin Hofer is excited about their experience,

“We have had 3 different players lead us in scoring this season and 6 different players score in double figures.  Our returning seniors have been on Varsity for four years and seen two state tournaments.  Nothing beats experience!”

4. Fargo Shanley       (8-2)

5. Fargo Davies       (8-2)

Bit game coming up in this class between WDA powers Century and Bismarck. Neither team has lost in the conference and are using this game as a measuring stick in the middle of the season.

Coach Ron Metz comments on the keys to the game.

“The key to Thursday’s game is to just keep the situation in focus.  It is a big game because both teams are unbeaten in our league at this point.  They are also are cross town rivals so we cannot let the game control us in how we play and perform.  They are a very athletic team and we will need to stop them in transition and to do that we will need to control or maintain the rebounding to an even pace with them.  We also need to keep turnovers to a minimum and not allow turnovers to turn into easy baskets for them.”

Dallas Hinderer has the BHS girls playing great. They haven’t had much close competition yet so they’re looking forward to the challenge on Thursday.
“Slowing down the Patriots is never an easy task. We do feel that in order to accomplish this goal, we will need to be solid defensively. To do this, we need to be stay focused on our individual assignments, as well as our team defense. Taking care of the basketball and maintaining our individual box out assignments will also be very critical to our success on Thursday.”
