O’Gorman at Lincoln

Last Meeting: 9/7/13 Lincoln beat O’Gorman 51-20

Fun Fact: O’Gorman has qualified for the semi-finals six consecutive years

What to watch for: Injuries will play a big part in this game. O’Gorman has dealt with injuries all season long. Last week their leading rusher Matt White left the game with concussion-like symptoms and is being evaluated this week as to whether or not he will play.

 

Brandon Valley at Roosevelt

Last Meeting: 8/31/13 Roosevelt beat Brandon Valley 30-0

Fun Fact: Last meeting was called in the fourth quarter due to lightning

What to watch for: This is a battle of the two best junior quarterbacks in Class AAA. Taryn Christion threw for 1,541 yards and 14TDs this season. Jake Comeaux has thrown for 1,381 yards and 17TDs.

 

South Dakota Class 11AA

Yankton at Watertown

Last Meeting: 10/4/13 Yankton beat Watertown 17-7

Fun Fact: Yankton scored 17 unanswered points to win 17-7 in their last meeting. Since that game Watertown has not lost.

What to watch for: Star power will be on display. Shay Bratland : 216 attempts for 1,304 yards (6.03 yd avg.) 15 TD
Receiving: 12 catches for 329 yards (27.41 yd avg.) 4 TD
Return: 10 returns for 309 yards (30.9 yd. avg)

1942 all purpose yards on 238 touches avg 8.15 yards per touch. Pretty impressive stuff.

Meanwhile JJ Hejna of Yankton is the top receiver and may be the best defensive player in the class. Hejna has racked up 821 yards receiving and 6TDs while averaging 8.2 tackles per game and getting 8 interceptions on defense.

 

Harrisburg at Pierre

Fun Fact: Pierre’s defensive coordinator Shannon Poppinga is in the Harrisburg Tigers Hall of Fame.

What to watch for: These two teams comprise the top two scoring defenses in the class. Pierre has given up 140 points and Harrisburg has given up 148 this year.

 

 

South Dakota Class 11A

Dell Rapids at Madison

Last Meeting: 9/6/13 Madison beat Dell Rapids 39-12

Fun Fact: Dell Rapids has made it to the dome four of the last five seasons and have won three consecutive state titles.

What to watch for: Madison’s Rush Milne has been dominant this postseason. He’s gained 301 yards on 26 carries in two games for 8 TDs. Dell Rapids’ Riley Schmidt has been no slouch either. Last week the junior ran for 233 yards and scored three times.

 

West Central at Hot Springs

Fun Fact: West Central hasn’t given up two touchdowns in a game over their past six games. In that span they’ve given up a total of 23 points.

What to watch for: Hot Springs has a nine-game win streak after losing their opener to St. Thomas More this season. Jake Oberpriller ran for 147 yards and 2TDs last week. West Central has a trio of backs that have been great this year. Cody Miller, Cole Tirrel and Cody Bussell have all been sharing the load while Jace Hanisch handles the ball at quarterback.

 

 

 

South Dakota Class 11B

Canton at Winner

Last Meeting: 10/31/11 Winner beat Canton 49-17

Fun Fact: Winner has the longest win streak in South Dakota currently at 22 games.

What to watch for: Canton has been the hottest team in 11B since losing in week 2 to Parkston (21-14 on 9/6). Canton’s defense has given up just 8.9 points per game and they have five shutouts (Tri-Valley, West Central, EPJ, Flandreau, McCook Central) in their last seven games. Winner’s defense has been even better statistically; they’ve yielded 8.4 points per game. Trace Meyer has gained 1,050 yards rushing with 16TDs to lead the Warriors. Canton’s talented quarterback Cody Majeres picked up five touchdowns including a 100-yard interception return against Roncalli on Monday night.

 

Parkston at St. Thomas More

Saturday November 9, 2013 6:00 pm CST

Fun Fact: Both of these teams have just one loss on the season and both lost to Winner (Parkston lost 14-7, St. Thomas More lost 34-16)

What to watch for: Parkston has the top scoring defense in Class 11B with 5.4 points against per game.  They finished out the regular season with three straight shutouts. Miles Semmler, Andrew Semmler, Brady Reiff, and Mitch Heisinger lead a potent defense. St. Thomas More has had to deal with the loss of their star running back Newt Johnson since the second week of the season. Riley Scherr has stepped up with 9.7 yards per carry and 13TDs while quarterback Matt Eastmo has paced the passing game with 20TDs.
