With eight FCS schools securing upsets over FBS programs on the opening weekend of the college football season, Kansas coach Charlie Weis wants to be sure his team comes ready to play against South Dakota on Sept. 7.

Weis told reporters during Monday's Big 12 coaches teleconference that Kansas State's loss to North Dakota State hit especially close to home.

"Obviously, (that's) an in-state rival that got a lot of attention," Weis said. "We had a really early-morning practice, and they were the first words being uttered. I said: Did you pay attention? Did you see what happened? This isn't a big surprise here fellas. This is what can happen."

Kansas, of course, has had it's own negative experience with NDSU. The Jayhawks opened the 2010 season with a 6-3 loss to the Bison. That's part of the reason Weis paid to watch Saturday's 10-7 win over UC Davis on USD's online streaming channel, Coyotevision.

"I think that having early success in their opener gives them a little bit of a jump-start on us, because they've already got one under the belt with a victory," Weis said. "I think that it's always a concern when a team has a victory, to iron out some kinks. The second game is usually going to be better than the first one."
