Pierre hasn't fielded a high school team until this spring. While Pierre is not ranked, they’ve made some big strides, “The idea of high school baseball in Pierre had been talked about for quite some time.  After a lot of research, a group of people including myself and my assistant coach, Derk Campbell decided to pursue this opportunity,” said Pierre Manager Steve Gray.

Ever since they decided to get a team together they’ve gone full steam ahead. They have already won nine games and have put some heat on some very good teams.

“We knew we had a good group of baseball players in the junior and senior classes so fielding a team was not going to be a problem.  We have worked closely with the Head American Legion coach, Matt Sisk so to not overuse pitchers and to coordinate practices so both teams benefit from the high school baseball experience,” said Gray.

One of the biggest stars for the Govs has been Cooper Walton at pitcher. He has been a very dominant. It’s hard not to overuse such a commanding pitcher. Walton towers over the hitters standing in a 6 feet 8 inches.  Willie Welch has had two quality starts versus Sturgis and Brandon in the last ten days after struggling in his first start of the year in early April. Overall the Pierre pitching has been good.

“Our offense has been led by Alex Gray, Justin Berheim, Ryan Goodwin, Blake Dean, Cash Anderson, Willie Welch, and Carson Eisenbeisz,” said Gray. Pierre got into the scheduling process a little late last fall so their schedule is thinner than most programs. But they’ve proven to be a tough team

I asked Manager Steve Gray what the expectations for the post-season are, “ As for the playoffs, we have to be sound defensively.  We are hitting the ball well and getting good pitching, but we have to limit our fielding miscues.”
