NSU Attendance Reign Continues

Aberdeen, S.D. is a basketball town. Nowhere is that reflected more clearly than in the support that community shows for the Northern State University men's basketball program.

The numbers are, frankly, a bit staggering.

The Wolves drew 50,726 fans through their 15 home contests in 2011-12, an average of 3,382. That was enough for NSU to clinch its fifth consecutive NCAA Division II attendance title, and the sixth in the last seven years.

Midwestern State University (Tex.), which reached the Elite Eight this season, finished second with an average of 3,094 fans. NSIC-rivals Augustana (2,712) and Winona State (2,432) checked in fourth and sixth respectively.

The accomplishment becomes even more impressive when you compare NSU's 2011-12 attendance figures to those of the state's two Division I institutions.

     Home Dates    Total Attendance     Avg Attendance
Northern St.             15            50, 726             3, 382

South Dakota St.             14            46, 484             3, 320

Univ. of South Dakota             14            23, 819             1, 701

I'm not sure how many other Division II programs can claim this, but it can't be many. Does it mean the Wolves are the most supported team in the state? No. Are the numbers skewed a bit by the number of men's/women's doubleheaders? Maybe. Either way, it's certainly something for the entire NSU community to be proud of.

{Author's Note: The NSU women have also won four consecutive attendance titles. The summary for the 2011-12 season will be released later this summer.}
