Munsen, Luitjens Meet at Miller Classic

For the second consecutive year, the "World's Only Corn Palace" is set to host some of the top prep basketball talent in the country.

The 2nd annual Mike Miller Classic will be played Dec. 29-30 in Mitchell, S.D.

Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.), La Lumiere (LaPorte, Ind.), Briarcrest Christian (Memphis, Tenn.), Central (Memphis, Tenn.), DeLaSalle (Minneapolis, Minn.) are this year's out-of-state invitees, joining Lincoln, O'Gorman, Roosevelt, Washington, Red Cloud, Custer, and Mitchell.

The idea is give South Dakotans a chance to see some of the top high school basketball players/teams in the country, and, in turn, see how the Rushmore State measures up.

Prospects aside, this year's hottest ticket will feature a pair of prized coaches.

Larry Luitjens (Custer) and Gary Munsen (Mitchell)--currently ranked No. 1 and No. 2 respectively on South Dakota's all-time wins list in boys basketball--will square off in the 9 p.m. matchup on Thursday, Dec. 29.

The two have combined for 1,363 wins and 16 state championships in their legendary careers, but have never faced each other.

If that doesn't scream "HD Game of the Week," I'm not sure what does.

That's good news for those of you that won't be able to make it to Mitchell. Midco Sports Network will have extensive coverage on Thursday, Jan. 5. We will feature both coaches on "Varsity Sports Now!" at 7 p.m., followed by the tape delayed broadcast at 7:30 p.m.

Tune in, set your DVR, or both. Just don't miss it. After all, this game has been over 40 years in the making.
