Power Rankings 9/4/11

Two weeks into the season and some teams are giving hints of what they’re made of. As I see more teams and get a better feel for the season I will need to adjust my power rankings accordingly. Make sure to check out the first installment of Varsity Sports Now on Thursday night at 7pm. (Replayed Fri 7am & 6:30 pm) on Midco Sports Network.

North Dakota

Class AAA

The West region proved that week one wasn’t a fluke. Just two weeks into the season and no one in the East remains unbeaten. Traditional favorite ,Fargo South, has stumbled out of the gate at 0-2. Bismarck showed their stuff in a 48-7 win over Davies, Mandan shut down Devils Lake and Century pulled out a close one against West Fargo to show how powerful the Bismarck area has been so far.

  1. Bismarck (2-0)
  2. Century (2-0)
  3. Mandan (2-0)
  4. Minot (2-0)
  5. West Fargo (0-2)

Class AA

Lisbon won an important game against Bismarck St. Mary in a low scoring battle 14-6. That win will go a long way in Class AA power rankings. I still like the way Grafton looks, they rolled to an easy win over Rugby. Bishop Ryan and Valley City sit on the fringe of my rankings waiting to get into the top five.

  1. Grafton (2-0)
  2. Lisbon (2-0)
  3. Fargo Shanley (1-1)
  4. Kindred (1-0)
  5. Wahpeton (2-0)

OTHERS: Trinity, Ryan, St. Mary, Valley City,

Class A

Harvey looks like the clear number one, they handed Midway-Minto a 50-12 drubbing. Velva bounced back from an unfamiliar loss in week one with a strong performance beating Williams County 21-0. I like the way Park River is playing but there’s no room in the top five this week.

  1. Harvey/Wells County (2-0)
  2. Hazen (2-0)
  3. Stanley-Powers Lake (2-0)
  4. Heart River (2-0)
  5. Velva (1-1)

9-man

Region One continues to look like the top region in 9-man. Napolean-Gackle-Streeter came out with another big win 38-0 over Strasburg-Zeeland while Wyndmere/Lidgerwood continues to roll behind Adam Bell and Jeff Illies. Hillsboro needed overtime to stay perfect. Central McLean takes a spot in the top five with an impressive win over Mott-Regent.

  1. Napolean/Gackle-Streeter (3-0)
  2. Wyndmere/Lidgerwood (3-0)
  3. Hillsboro (3-0)
  4. Cavalier (3-0)
  5. Central McLean (3-0)

South Dakota

Class 11AA

What a Saturday it was in Sioux Falls. The top four teams squared off in the President’s Bowl and left no doubt that the power remains in the city. Next week a battle of number one (Lincoln) and number two (Roosevelt) play each other for the top spot. Mitchell looked impressive again and Yankton could be a team to keep your eye on.

  1. Sioux Falls Lincoln (2-0)
  2. Sioux Falls Roosevelt (2-0)
  3. Sioux Falls Washington (1-1)
  4. Sioux Falls O’Gorman (1-1)
  5. Mitchell (2-0)

Class 11A

Dell Rapids didn't leave any doubt why they are number one. All these teams looked sharp in week two.

  1. Dell Rapids (1-0)
  2. Harrisburg (2-0)
  3. West Central (2-0)
  4. Milbank (1-0)
  5. Dakota Valley (2-0)

Class 11B

I had Winner as the top team in this class and they showed up for a shutout against a high powered St. Thomas More offense. Four of my top five teams last week suffered a loss which will shake up the power rankings. Tri-Valley has stormed out of the gates, watch out for the Mustangs.

  1. Winner (2-0)
  2. Tri-Valley (2-0)
  3. Flandreau (2-0)
  4. St. Thomas More (1-1)
  5. Groton Area (2-0)

Class 9AA

Bridgewater-Emery-Ethan may have lost last week, but I believe they reassured their top spot. They gave Canistota all they could handle and are still the best team in a class where someone needs to step up and dominate.

  1. Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan (1-1)
  2. Clark/Willow Lake (1-0)
  3. Leola/Frederick (1-0)
  4. Gettysburg/Hoven (1-0)
  5. Miller (1-0)

Class 9A

Canistota took a tough opening two games on their schedule and turned in two great performances. The rest of the class will have to show their stuff to compete with the Hawks. Corsica/Stickney came out hot too.

  1. Canistota (2-0)
  2. Hanson (1-1)
  3. Corsica/Stickney (1-0)
  4. Eureka/Bowdle (1-0)
  5. Mt. Vernon (2-0)

Class 9B

Avon proved that they are the best in class with a win over Hanson last Friday. Waverly-South Shore shouldn’t be overlooked this year. They have some serious talent and took down a good Hamlin team with ease.

  1. Avon (2-0)
  2. Waverly-South Shore (1-0)
  3. Viborg-Hurley (2-0)
  4. Castlewood (1-0)
  5. Sully Buttes (2-0)
