South Dakota All-Star Games

The South Dakota All-Star Games are a summer staple in South Dakota, one I got to experience for the first time last month. The event, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2011, showcases the state’s top senior talent from a variety of sports, including football, basketball, volleyball and wrestling. All of the participants are recent high school graduates, making the All-Star Games a sort of athletic farewell.

Teams are divided up into North and South All-Stars, with pride being the only thing at stake.  Like most all-star games you’ve probably seen, the atmosphere is extremely laid back. Execution is a little spotty, due to a lack of pre-game practice, and defense—particularly on the basketball court—is not a priority. However, all of these things are forgiven in the spirit of the event.

Through the wonder of television, Midco Sports Network will be sharing some of the festivities—in high definition, no less--with you over the coming weeks. Here are the first few air times. Be sure to check back with www.midcosportsnet.com for additional viewing opportunities.
