Road to Sioux Falls for Summit League Basketball: Ep 3

Six men’s teams are very much still in the race as we hit the halfway mark of The Summit League season.

North Dakota is in the six spot right now after home wins over Denver and Western Illinois. Kienan Walter hit a season-high 25 points in UND’s win over Denver. Marlon Stewart had 23 points, 10 rebounds and six assists against Western Illinois as the Fighting Hawks get to 4-and-4 in league play.

South Dakota has the longest win streak going right now. The Coyotes won three straight at home against South Dakota State, Purdue-Fort Wayne and Oral Roberts. USD senior Tyler Hagedorn is second in the league in scoring right now at 22 points per game, right behind Denver’s Jace Townsend.

South Dakota State is through the first half of the season at 6-2, and North Dakota State is at 5-2. The Bison play at Western Illinois on Thursday.  Western led Omaha the entire second half in Omaha, but the Mavs came back and won in overtime. Omaha will finish the first half by hosting South Dakota on Sunday.

Game of the week could be in Tulsa on Wednesday, with SDSU at Oral Roberts. ORU is 2-0 at home in league play, with wins over North Dakota and North Dakota State.

Meanwhile, the South Dakota women continue to stifle Summit League opponents. USD is giving up a stingy 47points per game. The Yotes margin of victory in the first eight league games is 35.5 points per game, and yes, they are 8-0.

North Dakota State is making a move late in the first half of the Summit season. The Bison have won two of their last three. NDSU beat Denver in overtime on Sunday. Madison Nelson had 26 points and 10 boards for the Pioneers, but the Bison's Rylee Nudell had 18 and 12 and Emily Dietz had 21 and 13, and NDSU came out with the win despite a season-high 32 turnovers.

So at the half way point, it is the Coyotes on top at 8-0, the Jackrabbits with just the one loss to South Dakota, Western Illinois and UND in the top 4. Oral Roberts will host Denver on Thursday, North Dakota State is at Purdue-Fort Wayne and Omaha will host South Dakota on Wednesday. The Yotes beat the Pios by 33 the first time around.

There are just five weeks left in the regular season on the Road to Sioux Falls. The Summit League championships start March 7.
